Good Peter Quince

This morning I savored a dish of stewed quinces, well sweetened, with clotted cream. Delicious!

For those of you who may not know, the quince is a member of the rose family, a shrub with a decidedly sprawling growth habit. The fruits are very hard, dense, smooth-skinned, and of a glowing lemon-yellow when ripe. (Never battle with your quince bush over the receipt of its prizes; remember, it is thorned! When the fruit is ready, it comes willingly into the hand, with a simple twist of the wrist.)
