In one of the reviews forming the appendices to this book, Wells describes Gissing's ouevre as occupying "the genre of nervous exhaustion." Possibly that is why I resonate so to his work.
Interestingly, the longest letters included by far are those of Gabrielle Fleury, Gissing's "domestic partner" for the last few years of his existence, in which she justifies, defends and explains herself to both Mr. and Mrs. Wells. There are far more letters to Wells than from him, seeming to indicate that GG was the more "emotionally needy" (in today's hideous parlance) of the two. Gissing is very handsome in the frontispiece photo. |
