Having completed The Crown of Life, am awaiting Our Friend the Charlatan, a 1901 edition with illustrations by one Launcelot Speed! That must be a pen name, don't you think? One imagines the dashing Mr. Speed drawing sloe-eyed, wasp-waisted femmes fatales and dark-moustached, cane-twirling cads.
